Vaccines Key to Combating Alarming Rise of Antimicrobial Resistance in Uganda
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Uganda is reaching critical levels, posing a severe threat to public health locally and globally. With drug-resistant infections responsible for millions of deaths worldwide, experts warn that Uganda must intensify its fight against AMR through preventive measures.
During a recent roundtable organized by the Uganda National Academy of Sciences, health officials, scientists, and stakeholders emphasized the vital role of vaccines in combating the escalating AMR crisis. A new policy brief was launched urging both healthcare professionals and the public to prioritize vaccination as a frontline defense against the misuse and overuse of antibiotics.
According to data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, the global burden of AMR continues to grow, with millions of deaths linked to drug-resistant infections. Professor Harriet Mayanja Kizza highlighted the importance of vaccines in reducing dependence on antibiotics, stressing that misuse of these medicines accelerates the loss of their effectiveness.
Experts like Professor Dennis Byarugaba stressed the urgent need for increased awareness and action, calling for robust vaccination campaigns and policy implementation. Pharmacists such as David Walusimbi also underscored the importance of engaging all healthcare providers in promoting vaccine uptake to contain the resistance.
Addressing AMR requires a collective effort, with vaccination playing a critical role in ensuring effective treatments remain available and saving lives. As Uganda battles this public health threat, embracing immunization strategies is more urgent than ever.
