Uganda Red Cross Delivers Relief Aid To Kisoro Floods Hit Communities

Uganda Red Cross Society has delivered non-food items relief to 350 people in floods-affected communities in Kisoro.

Hon. Sarah Mateke, Kisoro Woman MP appreciated the gesture as she said that the government is coming up with mechanisms to help the affected communities.

On 2nd and 3rd May, 2023, Kisoro district which neighbors Rwanda to the South experienced above-normal rains that resulted to heavy flooding and landslides that caused distraction.

The affected communities include villages of Bunyora and Kimbuba in Chibumba Parish, Chahafi town council. To date, the disaster has seen 10 people killed, 6 injuries, with crops, livestock, houses, and other infrastructure such as roads destroyed.

The floods and mudslides have affected sub-counties of Kanaba and Morora, Chahafi town council where 2840 households have been affected with an estimated 12,000 people affected directly.

This followed a two day disastrous experience of above-normal rains that caused heavy flooding and landslides in the area.

Now the Uganda Red Cross Society has given 350 people in the district relief of non-food Items. The supported families are from selected households that were worst hit by the floods and landslide.
The Kisoro district Woman Member of Parliament who is also the Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs Hon. Sarah Mateke appreciated the Uganda Red Cross for the quick response. She says that the poor road network along Kisoro-Kabale road has hindered the government’s efforts to deliver support.

Dr. Brian Kanaahe, Uganda Red Cross Director of Disaster Risk Management recounted the support they extended to the affected community.

Among the relief aid delivered include Tarpaulins, Blankets, Kitchen kits, Mats, soap, solar lamps, Aqua tabs (for water treatment), bed nets, and shelter kits containing digging kits. Dr. Kanaahe asked for the cooperation from people in and near affected communities.

The relief delivery exercise was witnessed by the Kisoro District leadership, including the District Disaster Management Committee, Woman Member of Parliament for Kisoro, the RDC Hajji Shafic Kagimu, among others.
