Speaker Among Directs Government To Table Statements On Recent School Fatalities

The speaker of parliament Rt. Hon. Annet Anita Among has made a clarion call to parents and teachers to improve their strategies in child raising and caretaking in order to combat the seemingly growing scandals involving the unsafe state of children in schools.

This follows the recently reported events that occurred last week, including child slaughter of Joan Faith Apio a Primary one pupil in a Soroti based school, drowning, and suicide.

In her communication to the House today, Speaker Anita Among expressed concern over the string of unfortunate events that occurred last week, including child slaughter of Joan Faith Apio a Primary one pupil in a Soroti based school, drowning, and suicide.

She noted that despite the seriousness of these incidents, the government has yet to issue official statements. Responding to her communication, Legislators expressed the need for school administrators, inspectors and responsible stakeholders to do better in ensuring they protect the children under their care.

Speaker Among tasked parents to boost their efforts in raising their children properly, while she also urged teachers to take responsibility and uphold their roles as the guardians of students under their care.

Addressing the issue, the State Minister of Education (Higher Education), John C. Muyingo assured the House that investigations are ongoing, noting that statements regarding the various incidents would be presented in Parliament tomorrow.
